The Darkness We Create

Reading: Psalm 107:10-16

Devotional: Israel's darkness had a painful dimension—much of it was self-inflicted. They had trusted in political alliances rather than God, and those very nations became their oppressors. This is often our story too. The things we trust instead of God—our careers, relationships, achievements, or control—eventually turn on us. There's a particular heaviness to suffering we've brought upon ourselves. Yet even here, God's hope penetrates. He doesn't wait for us to clean up our mess before extending mercy. The Psalmist declares that God "brought them out of darkness and broke their chains." Confession isn't about earning God's favor; it's about positioning ourselves to receive the hope He's already offering. Your self-inflicted wounds don't disqualify you from God's healing touch.

Reflection: Is there an area where you've trusted something other than God? What would it look like to confess that and receive His hope today?
