HEALING YOUR MIND & SOUL
Isaiah 53:7
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth.
Like a lamb led to the slaughter
and like a sheep silent before her shearers,
he did not open his mouth.
Recent decades have seen an incredible advancement in the understanding and de-stigmatization of mental and emotional health. This has opened up necessary forums and pathways for people to not only recognize but also receive the treatment they need. However, there is no amount of public understanding or acceptance that will ever overcome the inner struggle with admitting our own need for help. It is a difficult thing to own our weakness not just to other people but to ourselves. It’s in our very nature, given to us by our parents (Adam & Eve), to hide ourselves in the bushes and be silent.
Going through a season of pain is hard enough, but feeling as though we have to stay silent, stay hidden, only exacerbates the hurting. Satan knows this and is always trying to magnify the hurt in your life by having you believe the lie that there is no end in site, and that no one understands the kind of pain you are feeling. He strives to convince you that if people did know they would judge you. It’s all an attempt to keep you suffering in silence. But, someone else knows this pain all too well. Jesus. He also knows the hurt caused by having to stay silent in the midst of suffering and injustice because it’s what He has done on our behalf.
Jesus didn’t walk through the beatings and the allegations without saying a word against all of the lies as some kind of stoic stand. No! He walked through the pain of this life quietly so that you wouldn’t have to. He bore it all in such an unimaginable fashion so that we would always have somewhere to go with our pain. No matter what it is and how much you think no one knows, cares, understands, etc. you will always have someone to speak to about what it is that is hurting you. Someone to cry out to when you can’t speak to others. He carried it all, and intentionally did so in silence so that you can always find a place to say what it is that is hurting you.
Public awareness is a great thing, but it never fully deals with stigmas, judgment and the fear of being ostracized. We need something more, something better for those deeper scars that people can’t see. We need Jesus, and the great thing is that God has given us exactly what we need!
PRAY IT OVER:
What pains are you carrying that are not visible to other people?
Have you ever been misunderstood when trying to explain the mental or emotional pain you feel?
What needs to be spoken out loud so that it can be pulled into the light of God’s healing grace?
